  • Steps to change active voice into passive voice:
  1. Delete Subject.
  2. Put Object in the place of the deleted Subject.
  3. Use verb (be) according to the tense used.
  4. Use past participle of the main verb.

 

  • Passive Voice with Simple Present

 

Active –>       Subject   +   (base + (s/es/-)          + object

Passive –>     Object     +  (is, are, am)              + Past Participle (P.P)

 

Active –>       Subject   +   (don’t / doesn’t + base)        + object

Passive –>     Object     +  (isn’t, aren’t, am not)          + Past Participle (P.P)

Active –> A few words convey a great deal of meaning.

Passive –> A great deal of meaning is conveyed by a few words.

 

Active –> Egypt exports much cotton to the world. 

Passive –> Much cotton is exported to the world.

 

Active –> The manager writes many proposals every day.

Passive –> Many proposals are written every day.

 

Active –> He doesn’t finish the work on time.

Passive –> The work isn’t finished on time.

 

  • Passive Voice with Simple Past

 

Active –>     Subject   +   (Past Verb / Verb 2)     + object

Passive –>     Object     +  (was, were)                  + Past Participle (P.P)

 

Active –>       Subject   +   (didn’t + base)     + object

Passive –>     Object     +  (wasn’t, weren’t)        + Past Participle (P.P)

Active –> Shakespeare wrote many plays.

Passive –> Many plays were written by Shakespeare.

 

Active –> I didn’t cancel the meeting yesterday.

Passive –> The meeting wasn’t cancelled yesterday.

 

Active –> My father built this house.

Passive –> This house was built by my father.

 

  • Rewrite the following sentences from Active to Passive.
  1. They use this saucepan for cooking spaghetti.
    This saucepan ___________________________
  2. You tidied your room.
    Your room _____________________________
  3. You didn’t play this sport without a ball.
