Useful Phrases
- Quantifiers –> non, some, half, many, most, both, all.
- Rule –> quantifier + of whom / of which in relative clauses.
Examples :
- The potato has many uses, none of which involve drinks.
- Ninety people have died, half of whom were killed by mosquitoes.
- There were ten proposals, all of which were carefully considered.
- Two students made mistakes, both of whom apologized.
Other useful relative phrases are:
at which point, by which time, since when, a period in which, in which case, the part where, no reason why,
the reason why, the extent to which, as a result of which
Examples:
1️⃣ at which point
- He finished explaining the rules, at which point everyone asked questions.
2️⃣ by which time
- She arrived at the station, by which time the train had already left.
3️⃣ since when
- He has lived in this house since 2015, since when it has been completely renovated.
4️⃣ a period in which
- There was a period in which the company struggled to make a profit.
5️⃣ in which case
- You might miss the bus, in which case you should take a taxi.
6️⃣ the part where
- My favourite scene is the part where the hero saves the child.
7️⃣ no reason why
- There is no reason why you should apologize.
8️⃣ the reason why
- The reason why he failed the exam is a lack of preparation.
9️⃣ the extent to which
- Scientists are studying the extent to which pollution affects human health.
🔟 as a result of which
- He forgot his password, as a result of which he couldn’t access his account.
